Why insulation

"Insulation is sexy stuff."

President Barak Obama

Better buildings starts with insulation

Amazingly, up to 80% of all of the energy used by buildings in Europe could be saved by using existing, well-proven technology. Insulation is the easiest and most cost-effective method of saving energy in homes and commercial spaces.

Avoiding energy waste is not just about saving money and creating a healthier indoor environment; it also benefits the environment, energy security and the wider European economy.

Heating and cooling account for two thirds of a building’s total energy consumption.Unfortunately, the substandard thermal performance of most buildings means that most Europeans end up spending far too much money on their energy bills. Collectively, we are wasting €270 billion(1)per year. And as the price of oil rises, the cost of this waste continues to increase.

Substantial financial savings can be made by adequately insulating buildings. Common applications for buildings include loft, wall and flat roof insulation as well as the insulation of heating systems and hot and cold water services.

Clearly, the most sustainable and economically viable energy is saved energy.

Benefits of insulating European buildings

  • Lower household energy bills
  • More comfortable home and office environments
  • CO2 emissions reduced by 460 million tonnes* per year (equivalent of 100 million cars being taken off the road)
  • 3.3 million barrels* of oil saved per day;
  • Creation of over 500,000* green jobs in Europe.
  • Reduced dependence on foreign oil;

Millions of tonnes of CO2 and fossil fuels could easily be saved if we better insulating our buildings. Simply put, it is the low hanging fruit of the climate change debate.

A McKinsey/Vattenfall study analysed a number of CO2 reduction measures in terms of their cost and emissions reduction potential. The resulting Climate Map  found that energy efficiency measures are the most cost-effective way to save energy and that building insulation is the most profitable solution
