Can we fix it? Yes we can!

BOB GOES BACK TO SCHOOL TO PUT THE FOCUS ON ACTION IN BUILDINGS

Today in Brussels, Europe launched its new action plan on energy efficiency. Bob the Builder', Europe's leading pre-school character, and Eurima, the European Insulation Manufacturers Association, went back to school to highlight the need for immediate action to improve existing buildings across the EU.

Action needed in buildings

Soaring energy prices, growing greenhouse gas emissions, jobs and growth needed: energy efficiency in buildings is more essential to Europe's future success now than ever before.

Today, Bob the Builder', showed primary school children the energy efficiency potential of their school and what is needed to make it happen. He showed them where the school is energy efficient, where there is room for improvement and explained to them how this can be done.

Europe leads the way

At the same time as Bob the Builder' was showing school children how to improve their school's energy efficiency, Europe's energy boss, Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, launched the EU's new Action Plan on Energy Efficiency. This action plan provides national Energy Ministers with a clear view of the potential savings from buildings and the actions needed to seize this potential. It also puts a clear question on the table to national Energy Ministers, CAN WE FIX IT?

Energy Ministers need to fully support the action plan

National Energy Ministers now need to say YES WE CAN and get fully behind the Action Plan. As Bob explained at the school today, every building can be improved and the energy used by many buildings can be cut in half by very simple measures such as roof and wall insulation.

Buildings across the EU account for 40% of all energy use. Simple measures such as roof and wall insulation are expected to lead to energy cost savings of 270 billion EURO a year, a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide of 460 million tonnes a year (more than Europe's total Kyoto Commitment), energy reductions equivalent to 3.3 million barrels of oil a day and the creation of up to 530,000 jobs*

The European Commission's Action Plan is a big step in the right direction to help Europe save this energy. And so the answer to Europe's question of "CAN WE FIX IT" must now be a resounding "YES WE CAN" from national governments!
